Envoltorios

A series of enveloped objects that cite iconography from the Northern Andes such as alcarrazas, poporos and other vessels associated with Tumaco-La Tolita and Quimbaya. These objects acquire vestiduras that reference solemn catholic ritual and the drama of Ibero-American music and dance genres like bolero and fado. Enclosed, the objects give form to a state of sustained tension alluding to the legacy of proselytization and mestizaje.

In Envoltorios, Asicaz Monzón-Aguirre brings together a group of works centered on ritual objects from the Tumaco–La Tolita and Quimbaya cultures, as well as the Catholic tradition, to explore how the body, ornament, and devotion transform the way we look.

Velvet, nail polish, silk chiffon, and spandex envelop the sculptures in a deliberately ambiguous gesture: dressing them, concealing them, or even suffocating them. This thread runs throughout the exhibition, inviting us to ask what happens when an object is stripped of its covering to reveal what remains, while at the same time being clothed anew to imagine what it might yet become.
