Égida

Égida explores the relationship between the animal, the mythological, and the apotropaic.

The series consists of zoomorphic volumes with three heads that grant them a 360º field of vision. They evoke both the American totem and the gargoyles and grotesque sculptures of European architecture. Each of these beings represents animals from the northern Andean region—elusive due to their mythological presence, their evasive nature, their nocturnal habits, or their state of threat or extinction.

The series includes representations of snakes, tamarins, jaguarundis, bats, and owls—animals that have been part of the cultural imagination of the region due to their environmental and mythological significance. The arrangement of these objects on pedestals as an installation transforms the space into a solemn environment for reflection, where the animals act as witnesses and sentinels. A possible exhibition proposal envisions a set of bases fabricated specifically for these sculptures. Each base consists of a hollow concrete structure cast in molds lined with woven guadua cane matting. The result is a fluted concrete block that serves as a support for the sculpture while simultaneously preserving the imprint of the natural guadua surface, evoking bahareque as a traditional regional building technique. Each base contains a central post used to internally anchor the sculptures.
